Yum joins with U.N. to fight hunger

For a week, Yum! Brands Inc. dished out reminders of world hunger, and asked customers to ease the plight while satisfying their cravings for tacos, pizza and fried chicken.

The Louisville-based parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and other chains orchestrated a global effort to assist the U.N.'s World Food Programme in feeding the hungry. The campaign two months ago was the company's way of commemorating the 10th anniversary of its spinoff from PepsiCo.

Hillary Stuns--Four Theories

New Clinton ad: "Hillary's mom lives with her." But does her husband? Mickey's Assignment Desk: Has anybody updated Patrick Healy's May, 2006 story and calculated the number of days Bill Clinton has spent in Hillary's Washington, D.C. house in the past year (now that it's been officially designated as the place where you live when you live "with" Hillary)? If you're going to flaunt your home life then people are entitled to examine your home life. ... Assigned to: Healy. Hillaryland already hates him. He might as well take all the flak. ... 5:19 P.M.

The Power 100

As director of Tate, Nicholas Serota, 61, oversees the operations of the four Tate museums -- London's Tate Modern and Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St. Ives. This year saw a record number of visitors -- 7.7 million of them, of which 5.2 million went to Tate Modern, now unchallenged as the world's most popular modern-art museum, smashing predictions made when it first opened in 2000.

Tate Modern triumphs of 2007 include blockbuster shows of the work of Gilbert & George and Dalí, and the critically acclaimed exhibitions of both Hélio Oiticica and Fischli & Weiss. The Unilever series of commissions for the gallery's massive Turbine Hall has attracted more than 17 million visitors since it began. Last autumn's fairground-like installation of tubular slides by Carsten Höller offered punters the pleasure of descending giant slides in the name of culture.

Raga Asian Indian Restaurant, Clearwater

The restaurant has a spice corner in which they grind their own garam masala and so forth. At lunch during the week it's a Northern Indian buffet, but on Sunday a grand buffet showcases the lesser-known vegetarian delights from Southern India. And at night it's a la carte, with an interesting smattering of Chinese-inspired dishes. Raga boasts a full bar, a rarity in Indian restaurants.

So, there's a lot going on. The menu reflects that, too, with a synergy of smoldering curries, cooling yogurts and pungent sauces.

At lunch during the week, the buffet is not vast. Glide past the steam tray and maybe you'll see a nice chana masala ($10.95 at dinner), chickpeas stewed gently with ginger and onion.

Down at the end there's a saag chicken ($13.95 at dinner), a major slow burn of chicken pieces with soft spinach.

Fox plans to cut back TV pilots

The end may be in sight for the writers' strike in the US, but the fallout from the three-month dispute continues, with another studio threatening to rein in spending on programme pilots and development deals.

Hollywood studios and the US broadcasters were already looking at ways of streamlining the costly annual cycle of developing and piloting dozens of scripted comedy and drama pilots as the growth of digital media eats into the traditional network TV advertising model.

However, the production hiatus caused by the writers' strike seems certain to speed up the restructuring of the network TV production business.

Peter Chernin, the chief operating officer of the Fox TV network and Hollywood studio owner News Corporation, yesterday said he was looking to cut costs in production.

Impressive Rangers rise to summit

Although Rangers only breached the United rearguard twice yesterday, the performance epitomised how home victories have become standard fare since he returned to the Govan hot seat. If there was a normality to on-field proceedings then, that could never be true of the build up to the game following the death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell after he collapsed on the Fir Park pitch during last Saturday's match with Dundee United. The tragedy consumed life in the country far beyond the football world. On Wednesday the Tannadice club had their request to postpone Wednesday's encounter with Hearts denied by the Scottish Premier League. On Friday, the entire United squad attended O'Donnell's funeral in Hamilton. Barry Ferguson was one of the countless luminaries of the Scottish game who also attended, and, as a fellow resident of the Lanarkshire town, was personally affected by O'Donnell's passing.

Maybe CCA should have asked the three rising stars how they would feel about serving as photo advertisements for the school.

James Syhabout, who heads PlumpJack Café's kitchen, is the most measured in his evaluation of CCA — but he graduated in 1999, before the school was purchased by a large for-profit education company. "I know the school has definitely changed since I've been there," he said.

Tim Luym, who cooks at the Poleng Lounge in Nopa, said he found the school "a little deceptive." He says no one explained that many graduates of the expensive school go on to kitchen jobs that pay $10 per hour. "They don't really give you the reality of how much you'll be making," he says. "They never give you financials."

The third chef, Chris Kronner of the Slow Club in Potrero Hill, says the school does not have the best interest of the students at heart.

Ventana Health Creates Diabetic Friendly Sweetener

Having seen the effects of diabetes up close and personal, Tim Avila set out to offer a healthier alternative to other sweeteners on the market and developed Zsweet, an all natural, zero-calorie sugar substitute."My father-in-law has type 1 diabetes and I have a lot of aunts and uncles who have type 2 [diabetes]," says Mr. Avila, creator and CEO of Ventana Health Inc., makers of Zsweet. "It's a situation that a lot of people can relate to, especially in the minority and Latino community."According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes affects 7 percent of the population with Hispanics being in the highest risk group by ethnicity.Mr. Avila met a lot of resistance when he approached various big names in the food industry about developing an all natural sweetener. "I think that novelty and innovation becomes obvious when someone has already done it," says Mr.

Willy Northpole and the Phoenix hip-hop scene explode

The George S. May Company is going to join Magedson's corporate advocacy program. (Kushnir declined to say how much he's paying.) Basically, Kushnir will pay Magedson to reveal the complainants against the company, and then Kushnir can do what he would have wanted to do all along — address them.

Good news for Magedson. But not such good news for the people who had anonymously blasted George S. May. After all, Magedson will be giving them up. And if they're current employees, they're probably going to be in trouble with a capital T.

Kushnir says he won't sue anybody — he's learned his lesson — but if it's a disgruntled secretary who called the founder a pedophile, it's hard to imagine things will end happily for her.

Kushnir says he's happy with how things ended. But the incident does raise some ethical questions.
