NY calorie rule applies to cocktails

Put down that margarita, and back away from the bar.

A new city regulation that requires chain restaurants to display calorie information also covers cocktails, sodas and other beverages that appear on menus.

"Drinks are almost the forgotten calories," said Cathy Nonas, director of physical activity and nutrition programs for the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. "It's almost a side thought to the meal."

The city Board of Health voted unanimously last month to approve the regulation, a new version of a law that had been struck down by a judge last year.

The law, scheduled to go into effect on March 31, applies to restaurants with more than 15 outlets across the country. That includes fast-food places such as McDonald's and sit-down chains such as Olive Garden and T.G.I.

Symbollon Pharmaceuticals Completes Phase III Pivotal Trial For IoGen

Symbollon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTCBB: SYMBA) announced the completion of its IoGen™ Phase III pivotal trial. The study, conducted by physicians throughout the U.S., is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of IoGen, a treatment which may be the first FDA-approved, non-hormonal therapy for moderate to severe cyclic pain and tenderness (clinical mastalgia) associated with fibrocystic breast disease (FBD).

With the last of the 140 patients randomized in the trial having completed the dosing stage of the study, Symbollon is focused on closing the database. The Company anticipates that the database will be locked in March 2008 and plans to release the trial results at that time.

"We believe that the release of the Phase III data will be the most significant milestone in Symbollon's history," said Paul Desjourdy, President and CEO of Symbollon Pharmaceuticals.

Valentine’s Day

What these wingnuts don't realize about Mike Luckovich, is that in November when/if a Democrat becomes president, he'll start making fun of them. It's called political satire, and I guess alot of whiners here don't realize that is the purpose of political cartoons.

Auburn elementary school sees test scores, fitness both rise from ...

It's Morning Madness, and the kids at Pioneer Elementary School in Auburn are pumped up as usual. Armed with their portfolios outlining skill tasks, they arrive an hour before school starts, heading for the school gym to play with a purpose. As many as 70 youngsters, grades three to five, show up three days a week. There is no pressure. It's voluntary.

Mr. Mac, aka Michael McKinley, the school physical education teacher, is the Pied Piper. He watches and encourages as the youngsters walk on stilts, jump rope, swing Hula-Hoops, roll a Chinese yo-yo, balance on a moon-walker, climb a rope, chin themselves.

Rock music blares from the boom box.

Started last September, Morning Madness is the newest wrinkle in Pioneer's three-year-old healthy lifestyle initiative started by Principal Debra Gary.

Fish Oil Flounders, But Fiber Might Lower Stroke Risk

THURSDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Fish oil won't help prevent a stroke, but a high-fiber diet might make a difference, say two new studies designed to assess the impact of nutrition on stroke.

"Fish oils are not as good as people claim them to be," said Dr. Craig Anderson, lead author of the fish oil study and director of the neurological and mental health division at the George Institute for International Health at the University of Sydney, in Australia.

Dog survives avalanche, a week in the rugged backcountry

HELENA, Mont. (AP) Tom Pick saw the frightened look on his dog's face as the snow gave way, but he could only watch as a small avalanche swept the black Labrador retriever down the mountainside. ``I'll probably always see her eyes just looking up at me as she slid down into that thing,'' Pick said in an interview this week. ``You could tell that she was scared.'' That was the start of a weeklong ordeal for 3-year-old Lizzie, who somehow survived a week in the snowy backcountry before being spotted at a lake about 5 miles away. Pick, who had searched the avalanche chute in vain for the dog, said he and his wife are ``both still kind of pinching ourselves, afraid that it's a dream or something. We still don't know exactly what transpired.'' Lizzie was with Pick as he went backcountry skiing Jan.

Clayton Reaction: Perdue, Students

William "Brad" Bryant and James Bostic, both members of the state Board of Education, will update Perdue on how well the school system is proceeding toward meeting the deadline.

Three audits -- which were asked for by SACS -- will go forward. The first, by the state auditor's office, will go over the school system's finances, the second, by the governor's office of student achievement, will focus on attendance records in the county. The final audit, by Secretary of State Karen Handel, will look at the election records of the individual elections of each of the school board members presently on the school board.

Finally, Perdue announced legislation that says that if a school system loses its accreditation, there will be an automatic recall of the school board.

When asked about the governor's statements, Georgia Association of Educators head Jeff Hubbard called it "a good first step."

Hubbard said he wants to see a recall of the four school board members tied to the problems cited in the SACS report.

Expert To Figure Out What Killed Dozens Of Dogs

A renowned expert on sicknesses that strike dogs visited the Miami-Dade County Animal Shelter on Friday. She is trying to figure out what is making so many dogs so sick, even killing some.

Animal Services Department Director Dr. Sara Pizano hopes that by taking swabs from a dog's nose and mouth, she may be able to find out what is behind the mysterious deaths of at least 15 dogs this week. The canine infectious disease specialist traveled from the University of Florida in Gainesville after vets at the shelter found that a streptococcus bacteria had sickened the dogs, but couldn't figure out what else could have killed them.

After taking several swabs and blood samples Crawford will take them back to her lab and to California. She is hopeful to find an answer for the highly contagious disease that begins with kennel cough, turns to blood in the lungs, then death.
