| Creationism vs. evolution
One day while watching a science program, the director ran a clip of a churchman telling an auditorium of children that if any approached them with notions of evolution, they were to ask: Were you there when it began? So much for honest dialog. Todd, I have a B.A. with probably enough units for a M.A. if I had not been so lazy and preoccupied with other things. Books have always been my greatest source of entertainment and knowledge, which I fear losing as I age. What I miss about attending church is the singing of hymns. " .
Some old wives' tales are far from true
As long as digestion has begun, you should be fine. Don't, however, combine swimming and eating. You could choke. Coffee stunts your growth: No, it doesn't. But too much caffeine will have kids climbing the walls. If you go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold: You're likely to be uncomfortable but colds are caused by viruses. People get them more often in winter because they're spread more easily indoors. Reading in dim light hurts your eyes: Good lighting makes reading easier and prevents eye fatigue but dim light won't hurt you. Too much TV is bad for your eyes: No, not even if you sit really close (something else mom warned you about). But researchers say kids whose normal weekly routine includes more than 10 hours of TV are more likely to be aggressive, chubby and slower to learn.
Beware of Oversimplifications - Health And Wellness
In their desire to make sense out of health information, people often oversimplify the truth. For example, potato chips have long been reputed as a junk food. Actually the quick cooking process of potato chips preserves its nutrients better than mashed, boiled, or baked potatoes. Ounce per ounce, potato chips provide more nutrients than other forms of potatoes. However, because potato chips are cooked in oil, they are high in fat and calories and are not recommended for people trying to lose weight. By being aware that the truth is not simple for most health issues, the tendency to oversimplify and over generalize health information can be thwarted. Health Discoveries Take Time .
Thousands turn out for Winfrey’s Best Life kickoff in Meridian
Not many people get to start a life-altering decision with a nationally televised kickoff and a celebrity support system. But on Friday, more than 400 men and women from Meridian and the surrounding area did just that during a special filming of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in downtown Meridian. The popular TV talk show host joined her personal trainer Bob Greene as they kicked off their national fitness initiative, Best Life Challenge, before an estimated crowd of 4,000 assembled at Dumont Plaza. "We're really happy to be here," said Winfrey, who, immediately upon her appearance, prompted several minutes of yells and screams from the enthusiastic audience. "I'm happy that my state of Mississippi (the comment prompted another rash of yells from the audience) is going to turn the tide with our fat behinds," she said.
